Thanks to Telus Storyhive and WIA (Women in Animation) I was able to take part in an opportunity to expand my knowledge of the animation industry. In just 2, 6-hour classes I learned more than just storyboarding skills from the lovely Karen Lloyd. I also discovered that I would like to work and cater my skills and experiences to becoming a producer. I knew I wanted to get in the field but I wasn't 100% sure where I wanted to go from there, what I wanted to work towards etc. I absolutely thrive in the communicative environment of a team and I value my relationships with my peers and co-workers. I have a general understanding of each process and I love to brainstorm what would make things look better.
On top of this incredible experience, I learned a little bit more about Women in Animation and its goals after chatting with a super cool lady, Barbara Dawson. I absolutely love what they stand for. There's a lot of disadvantages when it comes to working in the industry as a woman. There's not a lot of confidence for women to step up and take the lead as they're made to believe men can do it better. I want to take part in a community that fights to change that. I want 50/50 women/men to be the norm in an animation environment. I love her passion to represent the community of women in animation. She intrigued me to be curious when she stated that she was too impatient to be an animator. I honestly related to this and felt it was not completely my thing. I do enjoy animation but I always felt there was something more. Everything has been a blur when it came to what I wanted to be until I talked with Barb! With graduation right around the corner, I know where I want to go, I know what I want to focus on while I ride the first waves of my experience working in the industry. On top of side projects for wildlife conservation, I want to become a producer and work with a team of creative minds while standing for equality and inspiring the next generation to have that mountain-moving confidence!
With a drive of inspiration I was able to power through a bunch of backgrounds and exit a rather low, unhappy mindset that I was experiencing too. The universe works in wonderous ways and no doubt I feel it has my back as long as I am willing to work hard towards my goals.
